Commissioner Gary Bettman upholds Dennis Widemans 20-game ban

After a lengthy appeal hearing and review proce s, NHL commi sioner Gary Bettman announced Wednesday that he is upholding the 20-game suspension for defenseman Dennis Wideman for checking linesman Don Henderson into the boards in late January.  In his ruling, Bettman stated that  Marshall Faulk Jersey the decision to suspend Wideman for 20 games was supported by clear and convincing evidence.  Wideman was initially suspended 20 games on Feb. 3 following the incident, which occurred on Jan. 27. On-ice officials simply cannot be made the target of a players frustration or anger. As noted above, the NHLPA observed that a reduced suspension is in the realm of po sibility, though the Union  Jared Hocker Jersey did not suggest one. I do not see a basis for a le ser penalty, particularly given the severity of the conduct involved.  On the other hand, I have the authority to impose a more substantial suspension and I an troubled by Mr. Widemans total failure to accept any responsibility for his actions. Neverthele s, in light of Mr. Widemans prior exemplary disciplinary record, I decline to increase the suspension imposed by Mr. Cambell, which corresponds to the minimum penalty that would apply if Rule 40.2 were applicable.  Theres a lot to digest there, but the summarized version is that Bettman did not feel Wideman was sincere in his remorse over the incident and had he not had a prior exemplary disciplinary record, the suspension could have been made longer.  Bettman also references a text me sage from Wideman's phone to another player in that pa sage, which makes you wonder how they actually got acce s to it.
